is scheduled to attend an interfaith memorial service in newtown. this will be the fourth time president obama has made such a visit following a mass shooting. in his weekly address today, he offered condolences and a call to action. >> we have to come together and we'll have to take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this from happening, regardless of politics. >> president obama did not provide specifics but in the past, the president has supported reinstating a federal assault weapons ban. >>> the medical examiner said he's never had to deal with something like this. >> my sensibilities may not be the average man, but this probably is the worst i have seen. >> dr. carver went on to say that all of the victims had been shot multiple times with a long weapon, presumably the semiautomatic rifle found at the scene. >> people all over the world are expressing sympathy for the victims in the massacre. in moscow, people left flowers and stuffed animals outside the american embassy. the prime minister formally sent condolences and said russia's thoughts are with the victims' loved one
coverage now of that school massacre in newtown. more of the tiny victims were buried today. this as we're learning about a man who helped six children he found in his yard after the shooting. jennifer davis is in newtown and tells us what happened after all those kids left is heartbreaking. >> reporter: hi there frank. yeah it's just every story gets even sadder than the last one quite honestly. you know this is a day when school buses and hursts were sharing the road as this community really deals with two different challenges. saying goodbye to the lives lost but also helping the children who survived trying to get back to a routine. as you mentioned they did have funerals today for two young children, two 6-year-olds, a man who lives close to the school is sharing his memories about how he helped some children, some shocked and frightened children -- who escaped from the massacre. >> reporter: stocking hung, a single white rose tucked inside. these women decking out a tree now adorned with carnations and ornaments. newtown reminder of the season marred by violence. a chilling tale
. a vigil wrapped up in newtown connecticut where the community remembered the victims of today's massacre at sandy hook elementary school. authorities identified the shooter at 20-year-old adam lanza. he reportedly had a history of mental illness. we have learned police found more guns on campus. we have news reporters covering all angles of this story. including who the shooter was. but we have jennifer davis. >> reporter: there was also a filled to capacity crowd here for a vigil earlier this evening. clearly this town is very much still struggling with what happened here earlier today. as is much of the country even the president was wiping away tears. >> it's identifying the shooter as 20-year-old adam lanza. they say he is the one who killed more than two dozen people including himself in this massacre. 20 of his victims were little children. >> there were 18 children who were pronounced dead at the school. there were two that were transported to area hospitals and pronounced dead at area hospitals. >> reporter: among the dead the gunman's mother who worked as a teacher at this schoo

laid to rest today. hundreds of people came together at the funeral home in newtown to say goodbye to 6- year-old football player, wrestler, and skier, jack pinto. >> it was real sad. >> reporter: flowers are in heavy demand this week for funerals and the many memorials that have popped up around town. this is alice's floorist in nearby bethel. >> you want to be able to help people at a time like this. i feel the flowers do comfort people. but this is so overwhelming. it's one of the things you read about, and it's not going to happen here. >> reporter: in the city of monroe, a middle school is going to serve as the temporary home for sandy hook elementary school when those kids go back to class. >> i think it's great for the kids. they need to go somewhere. this is close for them. it's great. >> reporter: every school in now town was closed today. but all district staff met at the high school to strategize their approach tomorrow when students come back. back here live, it is unclear when the students from sandy hook will return to class. live in sandy hook, john sasaki, ktvu, channel
